Locals Fare Well in Regional Wrestling Meet

Four of the nine area high schools participated in the prestigious Northern Region Classic Wrestling Tournament, with all turning in some excellent results in the competitive match.The annual tournament, held at Fairfax High School December 5 and 6, has been taking place for 20 consecutive seasons.

Thirty-two teams from the Commonwealth of Virginia participated, including 21 from the Northern Region as well as a number of private schools and a handful of schools from downstate.

Top 10 order of finish:
1) Robinson – 222 team points; 2) Westfield – 194.5; 3) Poquoson – 182; 4) South County – 149.5; 5) OConnell – 148; 6) Hickory – 127.5; 7) Woodbridge – 122; 8) Thomas Jefferson – 116.5; 9) Chantilly – 100.5 and 10) Annandale – 100.

Edison, St Stephens/St.Agnes and Ireton finished 20th, 22nd and 26th respectively. T.C. Williams, Episcopal, Hayfield, Mount Vernon and West Potomac did not participate.

Everett Epstein of St. Stephens/St. Agnes placed second overall in the 215-pound weight class. Representing the Saints, Epstien finished 4-1 overall, including two wins by pin and two wins by decision. In his final match (the first/second place match), he dropped an 11-5 decision to Victor Njomo of Annandale.

Kenny Clessas of Edison placed third overall at 189 pounds. He finished 5-1 overall, including two wins by pin and three wins by decision. He also dropped one match by major decision. In Clessas final match (the third/fourth place match), he took Martin Seneca of Centreville 5-2 by decision.

Matt Becker of Jefferson placed third overall at 275 pounds. The Colonial wrestler finished 5-1 overall, including three wins by pin and two wins by decision. Becker was pinned once for his lone loss. In his final match (the third/fourth place match), he recorded a 3-2 decision over Shane Doty of Annandale.

Kevin Zigaldo of Jefferson placed fourth overall in the 160-pound division. He finished 4-2 overall, including three wins by pin and one win by decision. Zigaldo also lost one by pin and in his final match (the third/fourth place match), he dropped a major decision to Kevin Koch of Westfield.
Mike Howard of Jefferson placed fifth overall at 140. He finished 4-2 overall, including three wins by pin and one win by major decision. Howard lost two by decision and in his final match (the fifth/sixth place match), he pinned Carlos Bonilla of Wakefield.

Elliot Mondragon of Ireton placed sixth overall at 103. The Cardinal finished 3-3 overall, including three wins by pin as well as three losses by pin. In his final match (the fifth/sixth place match), Mondragon was pinned by Jeff Ogburn of Poquoson.

Mehdi Charfi of Edison placed seventh overall in the 275 division. The Eagle finished 4-2 overall, including three wins by decision and one pin. Charfi, (who also played football for Edison along with Clessas, lost two matches via pin. In his final match (the seventh/eighth place match), he pinned Josh Ash of South County.

Tyler Haley of St. Stephens/St. Agnes placed eighth overall at 119. The Saint wrestler finished 3-3 overall, including one win by pin, one win by major decision and one win by forfeit. In addition, Haley lost one by pin, lost one by forfeit and in his final match (the seventh/eighth place match), he lost a 6-0 decision to Palmer Dickson of McLean.

And finally, Joe Latta of Jefferson placed eighth overall at 215 pounds. He finished 4-3 overall, including three wins by pin and one win by decision. In addition, Latta dropped two by decision and in his final match (the seventh/eighth place match), he dropped a major decision to Chris Straubs of OConnell.
