President Barack Obama reportedly said last week that he planned to nominate Don Beyer, chair of the Alexandria Community Trust and former Lt Governor, as U.S. ambassador to Switzerland and Lichtenstein.

Beyer was an early supporter of Obama in Virginia and served as Obamas mid-Atlantic finance chairman during last years campaign. He and his wife Megan raised more than $1.5 million for Obamas election campaign. Beyer also led the Obama transition teams agency review at the Commerce Department.

Beyer served as Lieutenant Governor of Virginia as a Democrat during the administrations of Democrat Doug Wilder (1990-1994) and Republican George Allen (1994-1998). He was the Democratic nominee for governor in 1997, losing in the general election to Republican James S. Gilmore III.

Beyer also currently chairs the board of Jobs for Virginia Graduates, the states largest high school dropout prevention program.

Beyer, 58, operates five Northern Virginia auto dealerships selling Volvo, Kia, Land Rover and Subaru vehicles. He and his wife Megan, along with the two of his younger children, Clara and Grace, live in Alexandria.
