Alexandria City Public Schools Monday announced that Stephen M. Wilkins began as the school systems new human resources director. Wilkins, a retired U.S. Army colonel, comes to ACPS from Chicago Public Schools, where he was program manager of facilities, supervising the facilities program for 650 schools and managing 130 staff and contractors.

Steve Wilkins is a remarkable find for us, Superintendent Morton Sherman said in a press release. His impressive credentials include degrees from West Point and Harvard and supervision of up to 2,600 military, civilian and contract personnel. ACPS will benefit greatly from his more than 25 years of comprehensive executive experience.

Wilkins has managed budgets and contracts of up to $500 million annually, according to ACPS. He is fluent in Spanish and active in community engagement, in addition to previous curriculum development work and college teaching experience.

Before beginning work in public education he served as chief of operations for military police at the Pentagon, brigade commander for the 6th Recruiting Brigade in North Las Vegas, Nev., and as an assistant professor of political science at West Point.
