Titans Outlast Rival Wolverines

T.C. Williams got just enough of what they needed with the return of senior quarterback Joe Hargrove to Parker-Gray Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon when they eked out a one-point victory over rivals West Potomac. Bolstered by the return of the strong-armed 63 Hargrove the Titans projected starter before suffering a broken wrist in the final pre-season tune-up against Centreville T.C. hung on for the rainy 38-37 win to level their record at 4-4.

The win allowed T.C. to remain in the Northern Region playoff picture, but in all likelihood will have to win its final two games of the year to make the postseason and notch the schools first winning season since 1995. The chase for the playoffs continues Friday night when the Titans travel to South County (6-2) for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

Maroon Hold Off St. Christophers in Downpour

Episcopal picked up its second win of the season at home Saturday when they beat St. Christophers 19-7. Dealing with an often-torrential rain, the Maroon kept to the ground and found great success behind quarterback Hunter de Butts who rode roughshod over the visitors and racked up 274 yards on 29 carries. The senior signal-caller had 1-, 52- and 55-yard touchdown runs to seal the win.

This weekend Episcopal makes the short trip over Seminary Hill to St. Stephens for a 2 p.m. kickoff Saturday afternoon.

Ireton Blows Out Sidwell

Buoyed by three Doug Vines touchdown runs in the first half of a rainy Saturday afternoon, Bishop Ireton trounced host Sidwell Friends 48-0. Vines, a recent Alexandria Sportsmans Club Athlete of the Month honoree, opened the scoring with a  34-yard touchdown in the first quarter before tacking on touchdown runs of 31 and 19 yards in the second quarter as the Cardinals built a 28-0 halftime lead.

The Cardinals scored all seven of their touchdowns against the Quakers on the ground and improved to 6-2 with the win. The victory, coupled with city rival St. Stephens / St. Agnes loss, puts the Cardinals on the doorstep of the Virginia Independent School playoffs with two games left in the regular season. Ireton kicks off at 2 p.m. this Saturday at home against Friendship Collegiate.

Landon Blanks Saints

St. Stephens / St. Agnes suffered a blow to their playoff aspirations Saturday afternoon with a 12-0 home loss to Landon. Entering the week No. 2 in the VISAA rankings, the Saints were unable to break through against the Bears on a sloppy Saturday of football.

The Saints (5-2) held the visiting Bears (6-1) to just one touchdown, but also allowed a field goal in the second quarter and gave up a fourth-quarter safety. Landon had the hosts on lock-down as well, forcing 10 punts and giving up just three first downs.

St. Stephens will look to get back on track Saturday at home against Episcopal with kickoff set for 2 p.m.
