An Alexandria Circuit Court jury Friday convicted Jose Alberto Osorio Jr. of first-degree murder in connection with the September 2009 shooting of Sylvester Muskelly.

The jury found Osorio guilty of first-degree murder and a firearms offense and recommended at least 48 years in prison, but sentencing is not scheduled until April 8. He will remain in the custody of the Alexandria Sheriff until then.

Osorio, 20, had been wanted for unrelated charges in his home state of Louisiana before his arrest for the murder, which occurred the night of September 3 in the city’s West End.

At around 11 p.m. that night, witnesses found Muskelly lying in a parking lot on S. Whiting Street with a single gunshot wound to his head. The victim, 50, of no fixed address, was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Muskelly’s death was the fourth murder of 2009. There have been no murders so far in 2010.
