DiGiulian brings home gold

Alexandria climbing wunderkind Sasha DiGiulian won the gold medal in last month’s Sport Climbing Series National Championships in Salt Lake City. DiGiulian bested 14 of the top American pro climbers for the top honors at the SCS finals. Tied for first after the qualifying round, the Alexandrian was the only competitor to successfully finish all of her climbs.

Yet, even with that win under her belt, the national championship barrage is not over yet for the 17-year-old DiGiulian. Over the course of Valentine’s Day weekend, she will face America’s top climbers in her own backyard in the American Bouldering Series finals at Alexandria’s Sportrock Climbing Center.

Ireton hockey notches 11th straight win

Five days before the Washington Capitals won a franchise record 11th straight game, the Bishop Ireton Ice Hockey team closed out the month last Friday night against Woodbridge/Osbourn Park with an identical streak. Playing without leading scorer Reid Yager, the Cardinal offense was still in high gear, notching 44 total shots in a 6-0 victory.

Ireton scored twice in each period, led by two goals and an assist from Tom Cyrnak, and limited the opposition to just six shots on goal as the Cardinals improved their record to 11-0. With just two league games remaining on the schedule, the win kept the Cardinals tied atop the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League standings with Robinson. They close out the regular season Sunday in a hotly anticipated game against undefeated Stonebridge.

Parker-Gray game set back a third time

Due to weather in central and southeastern Virginia, Monday night’s Parker-Gray basketball game between T.C. Williams and Kecoughtan, the new home of former Titans coach Ivan Thomas, was postponed for the third time this season. According to the T.C. athletic department, parts of Virginia between Alexandria and Kecoughtan’s home base of Hampton received nearly twice as much snow as the Washington region did over the weekend, precluding the team from heading north. On Wednesday, T.C. announced that the two teams, trying to reschedule for a fourth time, will not play this season as it is simply too late in the year.

Ripken League joins National Alliance

The Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League last week announced their inclusion in the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball, becoming the Alliance’s eighth member for the 2010 season. The admission of the Ripken League home of the Alexandria Aces was unanimously approved by the Alliance’s seven other members at its annual meeting early last month in Dallas and opens the Washington-area league to nationwide marketing exposure.

”We are thrilled to join the alliance,” said Ripken League Commissioner Robert Douglas. “The alliance’s representation of its members’ interests is first-rate and we are proud to be listed among such prominent and respected summer collegiate baseball leagues.”

The other member leagues of the alliance include the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League, the Cape Cod Baseball League, the Florida Collegiate Summer League, the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League, the New York Collegiate Baseball League, the Southern Collegiate Baseball League and the Valley Baseball League.
