THUMBS UP to Barbara Mason, founder and long-time director of Alexandria’s Child and Family Network Centers (formerly called “Network Preschool”), who is stepping down after 26 years at the helm. A visionary who was truly at the cutting edge of early childhood education, Mason helped CFNC serve thousands of Alexandria’s most vulnerable preschoolers, greatly enhancing their readiness for school. Thank you Barbara!

THUMBS UP to Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, who has said he will file a lawsuit in federal court claiming the just-passed federal health care law is unconstitutional. Cuccinelli’s argument is that a person who chooses not to buy health insurance is not engaging in commerce and therefore can’t be regulated by the federal government. His argument is logically sound.  Unfortunately, logic and federal policy don’t often intersect.

THUMBS DOWN to Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli for threatening a frivolous and partisan lawsuit to block Virginians from receiving the benefits of federal health care.  When added to his attempt to force public universities and schools to rescind anti-discrimination policies based on sexual orientation, Cuccinelli’s far-right agenda is an embarrassment to the Commonwealth and will cost the state jobs.  What happened to Gov. McDonnell’s promise to govern from the middle?
