The last throws of the 2009-2010 season hit a high note Friday night for the BISHOP IRETON boys (7-19) who knocked off Good Counsel 51-40 on senior night.

Holding a 35-34 lead through three quarters, the hosts began the final frame with a 10-0 run to put the game out of reach for Counsel, which entered the game ranked No. 9 in the area by the Washington Post.The Cardinals, losers of their last seven games, got 18 points from Antonio Rouse and 15 from Pat Hanifan to secure the win ahead of Wednesday night’s regular season finale with Bishop McNamara (result unavailable at press time).

The Ireton girls (8-22) closed out their regular season Monday night with a73-65 loss to St. Mary’s Ryken.

Despite a 27-point outting from Dexter Lindsey, the ST. STEPHEN’S / ST. AGNES boys squad (12-14) fell a game short of their 54th Annual Sleepy Thompson Tournament final Friday night, losing 57-50 to backyard rivals Episcopal.

The Saints dropped another two nailbiters since, losing by four to St. Albans in Saturday’s consolation game and falling 53-52 to Bishop O’Connell on Monday night in the opening round of the Virginia Independent Schools state tournament.

On Friday night, the St. Stephen’s girls lost their Independent School League opening round matchup 45-39 against Maret, while the EPISCOPAL girls also crashed out in the first round with a 71-43 loss to Georgetown Visitation.
