Lady Titans second eight takes silver at Stotesbury

Oh-so-close barely describes the photo finish for the T.C. Williams girls second eight boat at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta on Saturday in Philadelphia.

After 1,500 meters on the Schuykill River, all that separated the Titans from champion Mount Saint Joseph (Pa.) was 11 hundredths of a second little more than the tip of the boat. The silver-medal showing was the only finals appearance from a T.C. boat.

The silver medal-winning boat included Kate Banchoff, Gracie Barbara, Kalie Benjamin, Kelsey Donley, Alexandra Lemke, Nadia Magallon, Caroline Olsson and Jackie Tilley, with Jobelle Cruz as their coxswain.

The T.C. girls senior eight, boys freshman eight and boys senior four both finished fourth in their semifinal heats to miss out on the cup finals. Bishop Iretons girls junior eight boat finished third in their semifinal, missing out on the final by 3.13 seconds.

The St. Stephens / St. Agnes boys lacrosse team capped a winning week for the school with their own state championship victory in Norfolk on Saturday, beating St. Annes-Belfield 10-6.

After an early exit in their league tournament on Thursday, the Saints (19-4) turned right around and knocked off Norfolk Academy in Fridays state semifinal. In Saturdays final, the No. 1 seed Saints led No. 2 St. Annes-Belfield 4-3 at halftime and never relinquished the lead. It is their second state championship in four years.

St. Stephens / St. Agnes notches first ISL softball title

It was a quick rebound for the St. Stephens / St. Agnes softball team. Just two days after No. 3 Collegiate bounced them from the state tournament, the Saints were raising a trophy last Thursday their first Independent School League AA Division championship.

The Saints (15-5), behind the arm and the bat of freshman pitcher Alexis Sargent, beat Maret 4-2 in the ISL tournament final at Episcopal for their league crown. Their only league setback this spring was 4-3 loss to the Frogs on April 16.

Sargent struck out 13 over the course of Thursdays game and drove in the game-winning run with her sixth inning two-run homer over the left-field fence. The post-season title made it a double for the Saints, who were the regular-season co-champs with Georgetown Visitation and Maret.
