Thumbs up to the YouthMappers of Alexandria who are actively involved in increasing the number of opportunities that are available to young people in the citys West End.  Over the next couple of weeks 16 students from T.C. Williams will be conducting interviews with community officials in order to get a better idea of how to accomplish these tasks. Keep up the good work, young cartographers.

Thumbs up to the Alexandria Harmonizers, who were awarded 5th place in last weekends international Chorus Contest of the Barbershop Harmony Society held in Philadelphia. The Chorus competed against 27 other choirs from all over the United States, Canada and England. Their strong finish earned them the honor of performing during Philadelphias Fourth of July Celebration at Independence Hall.

Thumbs up to people who continue to support local businesses, non-profits and places of worship during the summer months. Please patronize our local establishments while youre in town this summer; many are still struggling with the shaky economy. Their bills dont stop during the summer even though Alexandria, like greater Washington in general, experiences an exodus of permanent residents this time of year.

Thumbs down to the HEAT! After record snowfalls this past winter, now Alexandrians are stifling hot and longing for a little chill. These high temperatures call for lightweight fabrics, cold drinks and less activity. One of the worst results of the heat is its effect on ones attitude. Try not to get cranky in this weather. Please remember, as you struggle to stay cool, to keep your cool!
