Thumbs up to Alexandria Aces Pitcher Max Knowles who has put together a great season in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League. He leads the league in strikeouts, is tied for first in wins and is tied for second in ERA. Although he is small in stature at 5-foot-10 and 195 pounds, he is putting up huge numbers.

Thumbs down to the unfortunate situation at Jones Point Park. Residents are irate because they must endure an 18-month construction project that will temporarily shut down the popular park. However, the $19 million project includes a new athletic field, basketball courts and other recreational uses. The Woodrow Wilson Bridge was a necessary infrastructure improvement and the Jones Point project is meant to mitigate its effect, integrate it with the park and please residents in the long run. Patience is a virtue.

Thumbs up to Melinda Patrician who has been the executive director of Volunteer Alexandria for the past four years. She will step down at the end of this week but her contribution to the Alexandria community will not soon be forgotten, whether it was her role in connecting volunteers with the community at volunteer fairs or her major role in Spring for Alexandria. We wish her well.

Thumbs up to Alexandria for being ranked 47th by Money Magazine as one of the best small cities in which to live. Alexandrians, of course, think it should be number one. One of the main reasons is its small town charm. The city is also one of the fastest growing another positive trend for our pocket of the Beltway. We hope that with this growth we can still maintain our charm.
