After injury, Muhtadi waived by Cardinals

On whats been a winding road to the NFL, former T.C. Williams and University of Maryland star Dean Muhtadi hit a pothole at the worst possible time.

On the very first day of training camp with the Arizona Cardinals, a little more than a week ago, the 24-year-old defensive lineman injured his right calf muscle on basically the first step of the conditioning test, according to a team training camp blog. Media reports said the team expected Muhtadi to miss significant time.

Muhtadi signed with the Cardinals earlier this year after a preseason stint with Green Bay in 2009. Despite the best intentions and all indications from coaches that things were looking up, the team waived the 6-foot-3, 300-pound defensive lineman.

In a video interview posted on the teams website last week, Muhtadi was optimistic that, after clearing waivers and recuperating his leg, he could get another shot with the Cardinals sometime after week six of the regular season.

The coaches had to make the decision to waive me injured, Muhtadi said. It was a smart decision you need every roster spot in camp.

Two Aces tour Puerto Rico with Ripken League team

Barnstorming around Puerto Rico earlier this month, a team of all-stars from the Cal Ripken League including catcher Will Davis and pitcher Max Knowles of the Alexandria Aces picked up two wins and a draw against top local competition.

In the Ripken teams second game, Knowles took the mound in the fourth inning and pitched four innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six in his squads 3-2 comeback win.

Appearing in game three, Davis notched a crucial single that helped drive in a run in the Americans 4-4 10-inning draw against the Juncos, a team of Puerto Rican college, junior college and Double-A ballplayers, before the hosts ran out of pitchers.

Aces manager Eric Williams also joined his two veteran players as one of the league coaching representatives on the trip. Through three games, the Ripken League pitchers struck out some 49 batters.
