A thief targeted a Good Samaritan helping a handicapped, elderly individual get inside a 1200 block Martha Custis Drive building, stealing the jacket she set aside while offering assistance.

City police say the victim was a management company employee at the complex. When she spotted an elderly resident at about 9:48 a.m. October 18, the victim tossed her jacket, which contained her wallet, on a nearby bench and offered to help.

After aiding the resident, she returned outside to find her jacket and wallet missing, said Ashley Hildebrandt, police department spokeswoman. She left the clothing out of eyeshot for about 15 minutes, police said.

No one saw the theft and authorities do not have descriptions of any of the persons possibly involved. The incident remains under investigation.
