After taking a strong lead early against crosstown rival St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes, the Bishop Ireton Cardinals didn’t let up in a 58-36 rout Monday night.

Junior Da’von Wiley led the Cambridge Road school in scoring, earning 19 points for the Cardinals in the easy victory. After putting up 21 points in the first quarter, the Cardinals added 18 more in the second and 11 in the third.

They scored only eight points in the fourth quarter, but by then it was too late for the Saints anemic offense to rebound. After scoring in the single digits each quarter, the Saints put up 12 in a doomed fourth-quarter comeback bid.

The victory puts the Cardinals at 2-1 after they beat John Paul the Great to open the season, but subsequently fell to Flint Hill. Ireton had a rematch with John Paul the Great on Wednesday, after the Times’ deadline, and will face Trinity Christian at home Saturday.

The 0-1 Saints welcome Flint Hill to their Alexandria campus Friday.
