The 56-year-old woman struck by a Metro train at Van Dorn Street Station last Friday morning deliberately jumped onto the tracks, a Metro spokesman said.

The suicide victim was an Alexandria resident, said Dan Stessel of the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority. Her name was not released.

Several witnesses saw the 7:16 a.m. incident. Alexandria and Fairfax firefighters responded but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
