Virginia education officials have honored Charles Barrett Elementary School with an excellence award for performing above state and federal accountability standards.

The Alexandria school was one of 447 across the commonwealth to earn a Virginia Index of Performance award. The VIP’s Board of Education Excellence Award is given to schools showing at least two consecutive years of meeting educational benchmarks while also expanding educational opportunities and improving student achievement.

It’s the second year Barrett has garnered the distinction.

“I am extremely proud of our students, principal and staff for earning this prestigious honor,” Superintendent Morton Sherman said. “This well-deserved recognition is an honor not only for [the district] but for this great city.”

Officials with the state’s department of education announced the award winners – selected based on students performances in 2011 – Thursday morning.
