Anticipating the highest turnout in the MidAtlantic Erg Sprints’ history, event organizers hope to drum up extra volunteers in advance of its February showdown.

Known as the world’s third-largest indoor rowing event, the Erg Sprints welcomed more than 1,400 rowers from schools and clubs across the country to T.C. Williams in 2011. It looks to be even more popular this year, said Jeff Byron, event director.

“In light of the fact that our registration totals are running ahead of where they were at this time last year, our expectation is that we will have as many if not more athletes competing in 2012,” he said. “As a result, we’re putting out a call for additional volunteers who might be willing to lend a hand.”

Volunteers can expect to do anything from hand out awards during the 27th iteration of the competition to setting up in the Gerry Bertier Gymnasium for the February 4 event.
