St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes grapplers battled to the top of the annual citywide wrestling tournament, going undefeated against Alexandria’s other three high schools last weekend.

The St. Stephen’s squad opened Saturday’s tournament with a 160-24 win against backyard rival Episcopal. Though their second round matchup against Bishop Ireton — the tournament’s defending champion — was a bit narrower, the Saints squeaked out a 45-36 victory.

Their coup de grace came in the third round, a 54-24 pounding of T.C. Williams that clinched the tournament title for St. Stephen’s.

Saints seniors Ben Luce, Greg Voorhees, Brady Riles, Tyler Epperson and Matt Brinckerhoff won all of their matches, as did junior Shaw Whitley and sophomore Jonathan Haley.

Bishop Ireton came away 2-1 while T.C. had a 1-2 day. Episcopal went winless in the city tournament.
