Just a month after winning a national title on the rink, Alexandria native Ashley Wagner brought home a gold medal at the Four Continents Figure Skating Championship.
Wagner, 20, cruised to the podium Saturday night after putting together the strongest free skate performance of her young career in Colorado Springs, Colo. Judges gave the flawless performance a 128.34-point score, setting the stage for Wagner’s first international title.
It also marked the first time Wagner has outskated Japan’s Mao Asada, who took the silver medal in the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Wagner, who came out on top at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on January 28, heads to the world championships in March.
