Episcopal’s longtime football coach and boys athletic director, Mark Gowin, announced plans to retire at the end of this school year in late January.

Gowin, who joined the boarding school’s staff in 1988, has coached the football team to four Interstate Athletic Conference championships and three undefeated seasons. Coaching baseball in the spring, Gowin also led Episcopal’s boys of summer to one IAC title.

“I speak for two decades of student athletes and professional colleagues when I express my appreciation to [Gowin] for his devoted service to EHS,” said Headmaster Rob Hershey. “He and his teams have embodied the ideal blend of competitive spirit and sportsmanship.”

When he wasn’t on the field, Gowin was in the classroom or working as the school’s dean of students. He came to Episcopal from Gonzaga, where he spent 10 years as the Washington private school’s athletics director and football coach. He’ll officially hang up the whistle in June.
