A Mexican national living illegally in Maryland admitted to transporting more than 100 women across state lines to engage in prostitution in federal court on Monday.

Marco “Marquito” Sanchez Hernandez, 37, ferried the women to cities and towns across Virginia, including Alexandria, between 2005 and 2012. Hernandez was part of a larger prostitution ring that stretched across the mid-Atlantic, according to court documents.

When he wasn’t driving the women, Hernandez drummed up business for the organization by handing out cards at Spanish restaurants, check cashing stores and construction sites. The women charged $30 for 15 minutes of sex, court documents said.

The profits – including dollars collected from drivers who shepherded the women to customers’ homes – was then sent to the ring’s leader, who lives in Mexico, authorities said.

Sanchez, who lived in Riverdale, Md., faces a maximum of five years in prison after striking a deal with prosecutors. He pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiracy to transport women to engage in prostitution and will be sentenced on January 4.

The arrest was a collaborative effort by the Transnational Gang Unit of Homeland Security Investigations and the Northern Virginia Human Trafficking Task Force.
