Thumbs up to the Washington Nationals for winning the National League Eastern Division title! It’s been 79 years since a Washington baseball team finished first. As Nats announcer F.P. Santangelo would say, “Is that cool or what?” Keep it up in the playoffs!

Thumbs up to David Speck, who will serve out the rest of Rob Krupicka’s city council term through the end of this year. Speck, appointed by a circuit court judge, was a great choice for the temporary post: He brings a wealth of experience from his years as an effective city councilor, knows the issues and will hit the ground running. Thanks for your service!

Thumbs up to Alexandria City Council for laying the groundwork for the Beachcomber’s revitalization. The city lacks waterfront restaurants and a renovated Beachcomber would be such a great place to dine while watching the boats pass up and down the Potomac. Opening a restaurant with a rooftop deck is a definite step in the right direction for Alexandria’s waterfront.

Thumbs up to the Alexandria Convention and Visitors Association for helping to fuel an 8.1 percent increase in visitor spending during 2011, generating $23.1 million for city coffers. At the recent ACVA annual meeting, the Virginia Tourism Corp.’s vice president of research released the final tally, compiled by the U.S. Travel Association. The data shows Alexandria leading other Virginia cities in increasing visitor spending year after year.
