After temporarily closing doors this summer, Amy Rutherford’s Red Barn Mercantile reopened at its new King Street location last weekend.

Rutherford wrapped the store’s reopening in with its fifth year anniversary celebration. Though a South Columbus Street staple for years, Rutherford moved her business to 1117 King St., replacing Arts Afire on the main drag.

The move meant downsizing, but puts the home furnishing store in position to tap into shoppers who might otherwise not have gone exploring off of King Street, Rutherford told the Times earlier this year.

“The action is on King Street,” she said then. “It very much is.”

Rutherford marked the reopening party with raffles, a trunk show, workshop and Sunday brunch. The events were geared toward kids as well as adults.

Rutherford credited her product line and customer service with keep the store afloat through the worst of the recession and economic recovery.

“Nearly half of small businesses fail in the first five years, but we’ve succeeded through one of the toughest economic periods in a generation because we offer high quality products, an ability to listen to our customers. We design to your tastes – not a catalog,” she said in a statement.
