Police identified the pedestrian struck and killed while crossing West Braddock Road on Friday as Robert C. Portelle, a 55-year-old city resident.

Portelle succumbed to his wounds after a 2002 Honda Accord hit him, police said. He was not in a crosswalk at the time.

But authorities now believe Portelle may have been hit twice. They are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the department at 703-746-4444.

A pedestrian was struck and killed while crossing West Braddock Road between North Hampton Drive and North Beauregard Street on Friday morning, Alexandria police say.

A 2002 Honda Accord hit the man at about 7 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials.

The victim was not in a crosswalk at the time, said Jody Donaldson, department spokesman.

The driver suffered minor injuries in the fatal accident and was taken to a nearby hospital for medical care. He is cooperating with authorities, Donaldson said.

Police have not identified the victim and are conducting an autopsy. Authorities will release more details about the victim after contacting his next of kin.

The department’s crash reconstruction team is investigating the accident. Police urge anyone with information about the crash to contact the department at 703-746-4444.
