Alexandria police charged U.S. Senator Michael Dean Crapo (R-Idaho) with driving under the influence after he allegedly failed several field sobriety tests following a vehicle stop early Sunday morning.

Crapo, 61, was arrested after an officer spotted his vehicle going through an intersection despite a red light signal, officials said. Crapo was stopped near the intersection of Mount Vernon and Hume avenues at about 12:45 a.m. The senator was alone in the vehicle, according to police.

Officers arrested Crapo without incident. He was taken to the city jail before posting a $1,000 bond. Police said his blood alcohol content was .110 at the time.

Crapo will appear in court January 4.
