Alexandria man pleads guilty to engaging in sexual activity with minor

By Melissa Quinn

An Alexandria man and government employee pleaded guilty to convincing a minor to engage in criminal sexual activity in federal court Wednesday.

James Raymond Schimmel, 53, met the victim online and convinced the 17-year-old to get together with him in person. After the meeting, Schimmel and the victim engaged in sexual activity, which Schimmel recorded without the victim’s knowledge.

Schimmel – who works for the U.S. Patent and Trade Office – faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years behind bars and up to a life sentence. He will be sentenced May 10. He was arrested October 24, 2012.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, the Northern Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the Virginia State Police investigated the case.
