Mayor Bill Euille and state Sen. Adam Ebbin on Thursday became the latest local politicians to enter the Democratic race for the congressional seat held by Rep. Jim Moran (D-8) after he retires at the end of his term.

Euille reportedly sent an email to supporters announcing, “I’m in!”

Shortly after Moran announced his retirement earlier this year, Euille said he was “seriously considering” a run at the seat held by the congressman for more than 20 years.

Ebbin, the first openly gay member of the Virginia state Senate announced his candidacy in a statement, touting his record in the General Assembly, fighting for LGBT rights as well as battling human trafficking and protecting the elderly and disabled.

“Now, more than ever, we need effective leaders in Congress who know how to reach across the aisle to accomplish important goals while never abandoning our shared progressive values,” Ebbin wrote. “In Congress, I will work with President Obama to protect the Affordable Care Act and ensure access to quality health care.”

The two Democrats join a field of candidates that has grown on an almost daily basis. Also running for the seat is Alexandrian Delegate Charniele Herring (D-46), as well as Arlington’s Delegate Patrick Hope and former Navy fighter pilot Bruce Shuttlesworth. Delegate Mark Sickles of Fairfax County and former Lt. Gov. Don Beyer have also announced their candidacies.
