In my opinion, the Alexandria Police Department has given up on keeping pedestrians safe in Old Town. As a biker and jogger, I see evidence of this almost every day.

Recently, while walking down Pitt Street, I watched a lady in a car do a 360 at the intersection of Cameron and Pitt streets. Not only did she do a rolling stop at the first stop sign, but she then blasted by a police officer sitting in his car in full view of the intersection.

I was surprise that the officer did not stop her at once and give her a ticket for failing to stop at the posted sign. As an eyewitness, I noticed the officer was conveniently looking the other way and therefore avoided doing his job in ticketing the women for running a stop sign.

It feels as though the police do not care anymore. Living on Pitt Street, I witness daily the speed that people drive at in their cars to get from one stop sign to the next. Every day the speed limit is exceeded past my residence.

Why can’t the police department place an officer on foot in Old Town during rush hour and start ticketing people who violate safe driving laws?
