Editorial

Denise Dunbar, Publisher and Executive Editor

Denise Dunbar is a 30-year resident of Alexandria. She was born in Atlanta and grew up there and in New Jersey, Indiana, Illinois and Texas. Dunbar holds a bachelor of science in journalism from North Texas State University and a master’s degree in International Relations from the University of Georgia. Her career has been diverse, taking her from the Charlotte Observer newspaper as bridal editor to the Central Intelligence Agency as Boris Yel’tsin biographer and head of welfare reform implementation for the Virginia Department of Social Services. She loves baseball, politics and warm weather. She and her husband have three children.

Margaret Stevens, Sales Director

Margaret has been with the Alexandria Times since 2009. Her interests outside of advertising include creative writing, painting and gardening. She graduated from the University of Virginia with a master’s degree in Landscape Architecture and a bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Studio Art.  She worked as a photographic researcher at the Smithsonian Institution Archives for several years on the Smithsonian Photographic Survey Project surveying photographs in the museums’ collections. After receiving her master’s degree from Virginia, she worked as an editor for Landscape Architecture magazine. Margaret and her husband have two children.

Patrice Culligan, Sales Representative and Publisher Emerita

Patrice was publisher of the Alexandria Times for three years before semi-retiring to Florida in 2013. She works part-time from there doing sales and coordinating the Times’ weekly sales production. She previously worked in medical publishing for 18 years. After working with the International Medical News Group, Patrice moved to New York City as the publisher of Physician’s Weekly. After five years as publisher and the successful sale of the publication, she started an independent rep firm and two years later joined a larger firm representing numerous medical associations and medical publishers. Patrice and her husband have six children and six grandchildren spread across the United States and Europe.

Marty DeVine, Sales Representative

Marty DeVine was born in Indiana and grew up mostly in North Carolina. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, then a master’s degree in religion from Yale University, followed by a master’s in History & Theology from Durham University in England. Devine began work on her law degree at the UNC-Chapel Hill, but finished law school at the University of Detroit in London. While living in England, she assisted in editing the Iran-US Claims Tribunal Reports and the International Law Reports at the Cambridge University Press. When she returned to the States, Marty became marketing director at Wells Fargo Bank for Institutional and Individual Trusts and Investments. Among other tasks, her marketing group was responsible for the monthly investment client investment reports. Marty joined the Alexandria Times in 2008 as a freelance writer before moving over to the sales team.
