Meet the Times Staff

Denise Dunbar, Publisher

Denise is a 30-year resident of Alexandria. She was born in Atlanta and grew up there and in New Jersey, Indiana, Illinois and Texas. Denise holds a B.S. in Journalism from North Texas State University and a M.A. in International Relations from the University of Georgia. She has worked for the Charlotte Observer newspaper, the Central Intelligence Agency and the Virginia Department of Social Services, where she was the bridal editor, Boris Yel’tsin’s biographer, and head of welfare reform implementation, respectively. She loves baseball, politics and warm weather. She and her husband have three children.

Erich Wagner, Editor-in-Chief

Erich has been the Times editor for one year and was the paper’s primary reporter for two years prior to that. He previously worked in Maryland honing his reporting craft, coming to Alexandria with years of experience covering community news and governments from municipalities to state legislatures. He won the 2012 award for Best Environmental Coverage from the Local Media Association for his coverage of flooding in rural Upper Marlboro, Md. and its effect on residents and business owners. He is a Baltimore sports fan and an enthusiast in English soccer.

Chris Teale, Reporter and Photographer

Chris was born in Massachusetts to British parents and raised just outside of Oxford in England. He moved to Alexandria shortly after graduating from the University of East Anglia in 2013, and has been with the Times since April 2014 in a variety of roles. He arrived at the Times having already covered events like the Olympic Torch Relay as it made its way through Oxford in 2012, and has wowed a variety of Alexandria personalities with his British accent.

Jennifer Powell, Design and Production Director

Jennifer is the real deal, bringing her 25 years of print publication and web design experience to bear at the Alexandria Times. Jennifer delights in working in her community of 25 years, making small business ads resonate, and being the conduit through which a streamlined, well designed, and award winning newspaper emerges every week.

Jane Hughes, Sales Director

Jane is a native of New England, born in Providence, Rhode Island and a graduate of Providence College. She started her career in community newspapers 20 years ago in the suburbs of Boston. Jane relocated to Alexandria in 1996 and joined The Mount Vernon Gazette and later, the Alexandria Gazette. She is delighted to find herself at The Alexandria Times working with businesses to find the best way to reach their clients and grow in one of the best cities in the country to start a new business. Jane has two teenagers attending Bishop Ireton High School and is active in the school community. Additionally, she is a Past Chair of The Fund for Alexandria’s Child, Publicity Chair for The Board of Lady Managers of Inova Alexandria Hospital, a Board Member of Rebuilding Together Alexandria and a Board member of The Old Town Business and Professional Association.

Patrice V. Culligan, Sales Coordinator and Sales Rep

Patrice was publisher of the Alexandria Times for three years before semi-retiring to Florida in 2013. She works part-time from there doing sales and coordinating the Times’ weekly sales production. She previously worked in medical publishing for 18 years. After working with the International Medical News Group, Patrice moved to New York City as the publisher of Physician’s Weekly. After five years as publisher and the successful sale of the publication, she started an independent rep firm and two years later joined a larger firm representing numerous medical associations and medical publishers. Patrice and her husband have six children and six grandchildren spread across the United States and Europe.

Deb Riley, Sales Representative

Deb grew up in Ohio and earned a BS in Biology from John Carroll University in Cleveland. Deb worked in Chicago for eight years and has extensive professional experience is in the areas of sales and marketing. She developed distribution channels for Kimberly Clark and other large corporations, focusing on lodging, healthcare and commercial real estate. Deb moved to Alexandria in 1996 where she resides with her husband and three children. Deb serves on the Alexandria Social Services Advisory Board, working closely with the Department of Community and Human Services. She also serves on the Miracle League Board and was instrumental in helping build a Miracle Field in the city of Alexandria through a public/private partnership.

Marty DeVine, Sales Representative

Marty DeVine was born in Indiana and grew up mostly in NC. She earned a BA from the University of NC at Chapel, then an MA in Religion from Yale followed by an MA in History & Theology from Durham University in England. In addition, although she began her law degree at the UNC-Chapel Hill, Marty finished law school at the University of Detroit in London. While living in England, she assisted in editing the Iran-US Claims Tribunal Reports and the International Law Reports at the Cambridge University Press. When she returned to the States, Marty became Marketing Director at Wells Fargo Bank for Institutional and Individual Trusts and Investments. Among other tasks, her marketing group was responsible for the monthly investment client investment reports. Marty joined the Alexandria Times​ in 2008​ as a freelance writer before moving over to the Sales Team.

Margaret Stevens, Sales Representative

Margaret has been with the Alexandria Times since 2009. Her interests outside of advertising include freelance writing and painting. She graduated from the University of Virginia with a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture and a bachelor’s degree in English Literature.

Pat Booth, Office Manager

Pat is from Ogden, Utah, but came to Alexandria in 1989 to serve at the Pentagon until she retired in 1995. In 2000 she graduated with a degree in sociology from George Washington University. Afterward she worked at Old Town’s Bombay Co. until they closed and began her employment with the Alexandria Times in March 2008. She’s been happier than a clam ever since.
