When Florencia Covalgi of Alexandria stepped up to the microphone June 7, the house was packed at Jennys Asian Fusion Restaurant on the southwest D.C. Waterfront.  

The Virginia Tech graduate student had recently read in local newspapers that the D.C. Lottery and Charitable Games Control Board was offering $500 cash to the person who could best sing its Keno Double Days theme song. Covalgi, a woman of small stature, shocked and rocked the house with her big voice belting out the lyrics to snag the $500 top prize.  

It was an amazing experience. I had lots of fun, said the soulful Hokie.   

The D.C. Lottery sponsored the singing contest to promote D.C. KENO. Covalgi plans to return to her native Argentina after completing her postgraduate work in architecture at Virginia Tech.
