Alexandria police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Tuesday morning. According to police officials, at approximately 1:30 a.m. an officer observed a suspect committing a larceny from auto in the unit block of West Masonic View. The officer, Capt. Scott Ogden, a 22-year veteran on the force, approached the suspect. The suspect pointed a gun at the officer. The officer drew his gun in response and fired one shot.

Officers and K-9 units secured the scene and began to conduct a search of the area to locate the suspect, who escaped on foot. Fairfax County and the U.S. Park Police assisted with helicopter searches of the area. A bloodhound from Fairfax County was also used in the search. The departments Criminal Investigations Section and Internal Investigations Unit are conducting investigations into the shooting. The involved officer has been assigned to administrative duties during the investigation.

Police confirmed that a number of other cars have been broken into in this same area in the past month. That is nothing really unusual and there have been no increase in this type of activity, said Ashley Hildebrant, a spokesperson for the city police department.
