July Fourth is the time to celebrate our historical heritage, including our areas Colonial homes. Typically, they feature small-paned windows framing the white doorway on the flat red brick facade beneath the slanted blue tile roof, in a design that is just as popular (and patriotic) now as it was in the Founding Fathers day.
A luxury version of this classical style is listed for sale at $1,935,000 with Jeanne Warner at Coldwell Banker. Call 703-980-9106.
Located on Woodmont Road in Belle Haven, this 18-year-old custom home welcomes visitors with a flagstone walk surrounded by the landscaped lawn. Beyond the paneled wooden door, the living and dining rooms stand on either side of the entrance hall with its winding oak stairway, in the arrangement that gave the center-hall Colonial its name. Both rooms display the 18th century elegance of small-paned windows and white crown molding above wide-plank oak floors, which continue throughout the main floor. The living room also features an elaborately carved French marble mantel, a window seat and display cases. The dining room is graced by a traditional chandelier that will remain with the home.
The living room is open to the rear library, where built-in carved oak bookcases surround an oak-framed door with small-paned windows. It leads to the patio that surrounds the rear of the house. The library also overlooks the rear lot through dramatic slanted windows.
Windows in the same design also appear in the breakfast nook, behind the gourmet kitchen. They adjoin another glass door leading to the deck. The kitchen features GE Profile stainless-steel appliances and granite counters, including the central breakfast bar and side desk.
Like many modern Colonial-style homes, this one contrasts the formal 18th century front rooms with an open, flowing contemporary rear living space, thus providing the best of both traditions. With Colonial-style living and dining rooms on either side, the entrance hall also faces the contemporary family room in the rear. Its floor-to-ceiling flagstone fireplace is framed by glass doors leading to the deck. This room is also open to the library and kitchen on either side. A powder room stands in the hall between the entrance and family room.
At the top of the winding stairway, a gallery with hardwood floors sounds another Colonial note. At the end of the hall, the master suite features its own brick mantel. The master bath provides the welcome modern luxuries of a glass-enclosed shower and a Jacuzzi whirlpool tub with a marble surround. Another bedroom has its own full bath, while two more share a Jack-and-Jill bath between them.
In the carpeted lower level, the recreation room features a floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace framed by glass doors leading to the flagstone patio and the landscaped garden, featuring perennial flowers and a koi pond. This floor also provides a wine cellar and a sauna, a bedroom with a full bath and the entrance to the two-car garage.
The schools are Belle View Elementary, Carl Sandburg Middle and West Potomac High.
