The Mount Vernon Girls Soccer Team steamrolled into the National District semi-final round with a convincing 7-0 win versus Wakefield. The Lady Majors, coached by Tony Garza, scored early and often and “punched its ticket” to the “final four” of the National District (and thus an automatic entry to the Regional Tournament next week).

Playing at Yorktown High School, Arlington (May 12) on artificial turf under a steady rain, Mount Vernon tallied five first half goals enroute to their decisive victory.

“We wanted to play “possession” and we wanted to wait until we got someopenings in the “gap” tonight, said coach Garza.

The major-league defense was led by goalkeeper Charlene Belanger and defenders Beverly Hoath, Danielle Horne and Katie Sargent. They kept the Wakefield offense in check all night.

The seven Major goals were tallied by Maddy Stephens (two) and one apiece for: Meghan MacNair, Shelley Hoath, Beverly Hoath, Leslie Fajfar and Tallulah Norton.
No less than three Hoaths start for the Majors: senior Beverly, junior midfielder Shelley and sophomore midfielder Marcey.

“On offense, we wanted to play ‘possession’ and on defense, we wanted to shut down their offense,” said Shelley Hoath.

The two major captains include Shelley’s elder sister Beverly Hoath and National District Player of the Year Leslie Fajfar.

“Leslie led us during the regular season with nine goals and 14 assists,” said coach Garza.

Garza, a Hayfield grad, gave a lot of credit to his two assistants in helping him lead the Majors to a successful season: Aaron Browning and Carrie Uffleman.

The Lady Majors were scheduled to square off with Washington-Lee High School in Arlington in the National District semi-finals May 14.

The winner of that game will face the winner of Yorktown-Edison for the National District Title on May 16.

Given that the top four teams from the National, Patriot, Liberty and Concorde Districts qualify for the prestigious Regional tournament, Mount Vernon has already qualified for the Regional tournament.

For the regular season records, only reflecting National District contests and not all games played: Yorktown (6-0), Mount Vernon (4-2), Washington-Lee (4-2), Edison (4-2), Stuart (2-4), Falls Church (1-5) and Wakefield (0-6).
