50 years on film – In its first viewing ever in the United States, an exhibition of Ryersons Black Star Historical Black & White Photography Collection is now being shown at the Canadian Embassy.
The exhibit, 50 Years of American Photojournalism: 1939-1989, features 330 images from Ryersons Black Star Historical Black & White Photography Collection, and is currently on display until Aug. 29. The images, taken by American photographers both here and abroad, capture moments forever etched in Americas collective memory.
The collection is one of the worlds great photography collections, providing a remarkable visual record of the 20th centurys defining moments, including the First and Second World Wars, popular culture and early space exploration.
Black Star was founded in 1935 by Kurt Kafranski, Kurt Kornfield and Ernest Mayer who were fleeing Hitlers Germany. Mayer brought with him the soul of his Berlin-based photo agency: 5,000 photographs.
The Embassy Art Gallery is open to the public Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 501 Pennsylvania Ave., NW. Admission is free.

West End Farmers Market The West End Farmers Market is held every Sunday starting at 9 a.m. at Ben Brenman Park, at 4800 Brenman Park Dr. in Cameron Station. The farmers market, which features home baked goods, breads and pastries, and locally grown produce, is one of a kind on the Citys West End. From florists to glass blowers, quilters to farmers, the American Market at National Harbor promises to be one of the most unique and colorful outdoor markets in the area. With breathtaking views along the Potomac River, the market will soon become a weekend favorite for residents and visitors alike. The Yacht Show at National Harbor – United States Yacht Shows will be holding the premier showcase for large luxury yachts between June 5 and 8 at National Harbor in Oxon Hill. The show will feature only discriminating yachts of imposing size to be displayed in the new marina at National Harbor on the Potomac. Yachts will be available for purchase or worldwide charter. On land may be found only the most impeccable of yacht launches and tenders, said a spokesman for the show. Tents and land space will feature an abundance of exhibitors providing equipment, services and materials for the type of yachts displayed. Displays will include engines, electronics, propulsion systems, interior design, yacht design and construction, maintenance, provisioning and financing. Tours of adjacent historic Alexandria by water or land will also be available as an option to yacht buyers. The show will be open Thursday, June 5 from 11 am to 6 pm, and on Friday, June 6 from 11 am to 7 pm. On Saturday, June 7, the show will be open from 10 am to 7 pm, and on Sunday, June 8, from 10 am to 6 pm. V.I.P. tickets are $40, and with this ticket youll receive concierge service, access to the V.I.P. Lounge, light fare with non-alcoholic beverages and a cocktail sample of beer, rum or vodka. Regular Admission tickets are available for $16.
