The Torpedo Factory Art Center will be taking it on the road with their first traveling exhibition that will visit other similar art centers across the country.

The Torpedo Factory Art Center is kicking off their first traveling exhibition that includes a selection of Torpedo Factory Artists Association members’ work on July 10 during Second Thursday Art Night from 6-9pm.

After the kickoff celebration the work will travel to four destinations before returning to Alexandria in time for the art center’s 35th Anniversary.

The chosen artists’ work will be on view in their studios and a map will be provided at the registration table for the art night visitors to get a sneak preview of the work before it hits the road.

The juror for this exhibition, Jenine Culligan, Senior Curator for the Huntington Museum of Art, will be providing a talk at 7 pm along with a slide show of the selected work.

The catalog for this traveling exhibition will go on sale that evening.

From Here 2 There will begin its road trip in September where it will land in Fredericksburg, VA at the LibertyTown Artworks. It will then travel to Reading, PA stopping at the GoggleWorks Art Center, where it will be on exhibit in January and February 2009. It will then travel across the country landing at the St. Mary’s Art Center in Virginia City, NV for May and June and then back to South Boston, VA to the Prizery Fine Arts Center in August, 2009. Its final destination will be at the Athenaeum in Alexandria, VA during its 35th Anniversary month. While at the Athenaeum a selection of work from all the participating venues will be on exhibit in the Target Gallery.

The common thread that ties all the art centers together with the TFAC is the reuse of the architecture to become an arts center that has helped to revitalize communities.

Also, in the Target Gallery, the Torpedo Factory Artist of the Year Joyce McCarten: “Don’t Postpone Joy” will still be on exhibit through July 13.

Torpedo Factory Art Center is located on the Waterfront in Old Town Alexandria at 105 N. Union Street.  The hours of operation are 7 days a week from 10-6pm and Thursdays until 9pm.
