Get ready to dig out your obsolete computers, VCRs, and other electronics equipment from your storage rooms, basements, and attics and bring them to the Crystal Green Power Purge scheduled for Aug. 11-14.

Sponsored by the Crystal City Business Improvement District in partnership with JK Moving & Storage, Vornado/Charles E. Smith, and the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the Crystal Green Power Purge provides area businesses and residents with an opportunity to safely, securely and sustainably recycle unwanted electronics.

The Power Purge provides a means by which businesses and residents can dispose of old electronics items with a clean and green conscious, said Angie Fox President/CEO of the Crystal City BID. Ensuring that the toxic components of our old electronics do not end up in landfills is an important and easy way to help the environment and JKs recycling process makes them the perfect partner!

The collected electronics components will be transported by JK to a recycling plant where all the components are broken down into commodity-grade materials including ferrous metals, copper, plastics, and aluminum and sold for re-use.

The process will prove valuable for the defense-related offices and contractors looking to dispose of obsolete information technology (IT) assets that may have contained sensitive or classified information. Preventing data retrieval represents a hallmark of the JK recycling process.

By locking sensitive assets in a secure commercial transport bin, puncturing data storage devices, shredding the materials, and separating out the raw materials, retrieval of data from any IT asset becomes impossible. Additionally, the JK process does not rely on the shipment of materials to developing countries where recycling never actually occurs, but rather partners with a local recycling facility in Maryland.

Many businesses are reluctant to dispose of their IT assets due to security concerns, said Steve Kuhn, Vice President of JK Moving & Storage. Our process ensures total data destruction through recycling thereby meeting the dual goals of being environmentally-friendly and alleviating security concerns.

Those interested in disposing of items should look for the large JK Moving & Storage Truck with the large Power Purge Banner between Monday, August 11th and Thursday August 14th from 11:30 AM to 7:30 PM in the parking lot near the intersection of 20th Street and S. Bell catty-corner to the Crystal City Marriott. Volunteers from CEA, and Vornado/Charles E. Smith will then greet you to appropriately sort the electronics into various bins. Businesses with a large proportion of items to dispose can make arrangements for JK Moving & Storage staff to come directly to their offices for a bulk pick-up.

The Crystal City BID continues to roll out new programs under the Crystal Green umbrella. By reducing energy demand and the areas carbon footprint, minimizing automotive travel, increasing recycling levels, and promoting environmental awareness and sensitivity of area businesses, restaurants, and residents, Crystal Green seeks to communicate that Crystal City is the regions Emerald City.
