ACVA Annual Meeting Set for September 25
The Alexandria Convention and Visitors Association will hold its annual meeting at the Crown Plaza in Old Town from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on September 25. Adam Sacks, founder of Tourism Economics will be the guest speaker.

WETA Honors Signatures Gardner
WETAs Hometown Heroes will focus on Marcia Gardner, education director of Signature Theatre in Arlington, in a profile airing throughout September on WETA-TV 26. WETA selected Gardner for her development of education programs that encourage Arlington students to expand their imaginations to think innovatively about the world around them. Her profile premieres immediately before Antiques Roadshow on Monday, September 8, at 8 p.m., and repeats throughout the month.

Gardner directs the theaters community outreach and education programs, which cater to underserved middle and high school students in Arlington County. Through the mechanics of theater, Gardner illustrates to students, many who have no previous theatrical training, that fundamentals of drama can be applied to other areas of life. Gardner mentors students, urging them to broaden their experiences through work in two programs: Signature in the Schools and The Apprentice at Signature.

Old Town to Host the Festival of the Arts
The Alexandria Festival of the Arts will take place on King Street on September 13 and 14.  King Street will be closed to traffic and will be lined with tents and stalls of local artisans. Over 200 artists will be featured during the festival, giving the public an opportunity to observe and purchase their works.

From noon to 4:00 p.m. on September 13, the Torpedo Factory will host an art exhibition for families, featuring demonstrations and live entertainment.
The festival will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. Free.

AARP Life@50+ National Expo September 4 – 6
AARPs National Event and Expo will be held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., from September 4 6 to celebrate the organizations 50th anniversary. More than 25,000 people are expected to attend the Expo, which will feature concerts by Paul Simon, Natalie Cole, Chaka Khan, Patti Austin and Chicago. Special appearances by notables such as poet Maya Angelou, television icon Regis Philbin, baseball Hall-of-Famer Cal Ripken Jr., music impresario Quincy Jones, fashion consultant Clinton Kelly, political pundits Paul Begala and Tucker Carlson, Academy Award-winner Shirley MacLaine, rock star Gene Simmons and Desperate Housewives actor Ricardo Chavira, are also scheduled for the three-day event.
