Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology Principal Darren Reed has announced that he is resigning effective Tuesday, Aug. 26. Reed has accepted a position with an educational company that will allow him to spend more time with his family.
Citing personal reasons in a letter to parents, Reed wrote: As of this year, both of my own children will be in school and I am entering the final stages of my doctoral studies. Each of these facets of my life means a great deal to me which added to the difficulty of my decision.
The principal also wrote: For the past six years I have been utterly committed to making Cora Kelly the best school for your children. I have worked with superb educators in shaping a learning environment that allows each child to blossom and excel . . ..
He also said, Cora Kelly is in a good place and will continue to thrive under the leadership of the new superintendent and the incoming principal.
Retired Alexandria City Public Schools Principal Karl Smith will serve as interim principal until a permanent replacement has been selected. The search process has already begun.
[Reeds] seemingly endless energy, enthusiasm and passion were a big part of why we entered the school lottery with Cora Kelly as our first choice, said parent Carolyn Semedo. We are really sorry to learn that he will be leaving the school, just as my daughter is entering the first grade Principal Reed has had a really positive impact on the school and [I] regret that we will not have the benefit of his presence moving forward.
