In August 1963, flood waters devastated Arlandria after heavy rains and clogged drainage pipes caused Four Mile Run to overflow its banks. More than 30 businesses, including Haymans on Mount Vernon Avenue, suffered severe damage when debris and mud ravaged their shops. After washing what little merchandise could be salvaged, the Arlandria Retail Merchants Association hosted a Flood n Mud sale. Sporadic but severe flooding plagued Arlandria into the late 1970s until a $50 million flood control project was completed.
