The Alexandria Commission for the arts, in collaboration with the Alexandria Rotary Club, held the 2008 Alex Awards at the Taste For Giving event at the Torpedo Factory Center October 24.
The evening included food and beverages from top Alexandria Restaurants, musical accompaniment by the Washington Balalaika Society, a musical presentation by The Little Theatre of Alexandria, silent and live auctions, the Alex Award ceremony and a special award presentation to Mayor Bill Euille.
Frank Regan, Gary Thomas, Nina Tisara and Frank Shutts each won an Alex Award, given to those who have achieved excellence in an artistic discipline, excellence in service to the arts, outstanding contribution to arts education and innovative partnerships between businesses and the arts.
Frank Regan has choreographed more than 100 productions for stage and television and is one of the most decorated ballroom dance champions in the United States.
As curriculum Specialist for Arts and Music in Alexandria City Public Schools, Gary Thomas oversees the development and implementation of the entire K-12 fine arts curricula.
Nina Tisaras photography has been enriching the Alexandria community for many years. Her latest project, Living Legends of Alexandria, a photo documentary record of Alexandrias recent history, serves as a work of art and a permanent record of individuals who have made a difference in the quality of life in Alexandria.
Not pictured is winner Frank Shutts whose drive for professional quality theater at accessible prices is deeply entrenched at The Little Theater of Alexandria where during his term as President and later governor for public relations, he established many initiatives that audience members enjoy today.
