St. Lukes Day School kicked-off their 50th anniversary celebration with its 11th annual silent auction recently, with all auction proceeds benefiting the pre-school educational programs offered by the school at 8009 Fort Hunt Road.
This years celebrity auctioneer was Redskins legend Mark Moseley. Moseleys participation is an example of his ongoing commitment to community service and to this area, said Tracy Hutchison, the auction’s co-chair. As president of the Redskins Alumni Association, his special focus is on childrens organizations, and we are truly grateful that he chose to spend the evening with St. Lukes.
Moseley came to the Redskins in 1974, and eight years later was voted the National Football Leagues Most Valuable Player the first time a kicker was nominated or elected for this position. He holds scores of NFL kicking records, including the single season scoring record of 161 points.
Moseley retired from pro football in 1987 and has recently become eligible for induction into the Hall of Fame. He currently serves as director of franchise development with Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries, a nationwide chain of hamburger joints founded in Alexandria by the Murrells, St. Luke’s grandparents.
“St. Lukes appreciates the ongoing support of local businesses and the friends of St. Lukes who have generously donated to the event,” said Head of School Anne Marie Coggins. The event featured dinner donated by Five Guys, Costco, Giant Foods, Roseinas, Shoppers Food Warehouse and Hollin Hall Pastry Shops Pastry Chefs Lois Jessup and Lora Mochel.
An extension of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, the pre-school was established in 1958, operating academic year and summer enrichment programs for two-, three- and four year old children under the supervision and control of the Rector, Vestry, and Board of Trustees. “St. Luke’s offers a high quality pre-school program in an environment that encourages curiosity, an excitement for learning, group participation while singing, playing and adventuring” Coggins said.
