The Episcopal High School boys basketball team took home top honors in the Sleepy Thompson Invitational Saturday, defeating John Carroll (Baltimore, Md.) 72-68 in the championship game.
Given Kalipinde, the tournament MVP, led the Maroon with 24 points in the championship game played at St. Stephens/St. Agnes. Yao Sithole and Jordan Martinez joined Kalipinde on the all-tournament team.
The Maroon advanced to the title game after beating Potomac 65-41 on Thursday and Flint Hill 80-77 on Friday.
Episcopal moved to 18-7 on the season with the win, the eighth in their last nine games. The Maroon go into the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA)state championship, which starts this week, as the tournaments second seed.
NOTES: Episcopal lost 68-59 Wednesday to #7 Christchurch in the opening round of the VISAA state tournament. Christchurch had to beat #10 Liberty Christian before facing the Maroon. Episcopal, winners of three straight state championships from 1997-1999, sees its season end at 18-8.
