Walt Disney Parks and Resorts bought 15 acres of land at National Harbor, which it is considering as a location for a resort and hotel across the Potomac River from Old Town, according to a spokesman for The Peterson Companies, the landowner.

Disney purchased the Maryland property for $11 million.

Disney is the top family entertainment company in the world, and its purchase is a great vote of confidence in the future of National Harbor and the Washington area as a top family tourism destination.

National Harbor has become a tourism partner of sorts with Alexandrias Old Town waterfront, where a water taxi connects the two destinations.

This is not the first time Disney has dabbled in the region. The theme park giant attempted to build a patriotic-themed amusement park in Prince William County but the idea was shot down by locals.
