Rebuilding Together Alexandria, a nonprofit that provides free home repair services to in-need residents, was the recipient of two local awards. The service of more than 1,000 volunteers who, year round, repair and renovate Alexandria nonprofit facilities and homes belonging to low-income residents, enabled Rebuilding Together to qualify for this recognition.

The Alexandria Commission on Aging awarded Rebuilding Together Alexandria its 2009 Excellence in Aging Award for contributions to elevating the quality of life for older Alexandrians. RTA also received the Alexandria Commission on Persons with Disabilities Community Organization award for 2009 because of RTAs efforts to remove barriers and extend services to Alexandrias residents with physical or sensory disabilities.

At a time when the nation is dealing with an unprecedented housing crisis, there is an overwhelming need for our work, said Katharine Medina, executive director of RTA. We make it possible for homeowners, especially the elderly and physically-challenged, to continue to live independently by restoring their homes to safe, efficient, and livable conditions.
