Two Alexandria siblings have recently been selected as Junior Olympians. Liam and Eliza Malakoff are tough competitors in the sport of whitewater slalom, in which they must navigate their boats down a twisting course through a series of gates hung above flowing water. Liam, 15, and Eliza, 11, have both qualified to compete in the international races next month in Ontario, Canada.

Now, to help raise funds for the trip, the siblings are offering to teach basic kayaking skills to other kids. The classes are being offered under the sponsorship of their coach, Dana Chladek, two-time Olympic kayaking medalist, and the Bethesda Center of Excellence (BCE), a nonprofit group that promotes paddle sports in the Washington, D.C. area.

Liam, Eliza and their BCE teammates will hold the Learn to Paddle fundraisers from 2 to 5 p.m. on June 19 and 20, on the Potomac River near Glen Echo, Md. The workshops are open to ages 10 to 15. All necessary equipment will be provided, along with 3 hours of instruction from Olympians young and old. The proceeds will support the teams trip to Canada in late June and early July.
