The Parent Leadership Training Institute kicked-off its fourth year of operation with a day-long retreat on Saturday, November 7. The retreat is built into the 20-week PLTI program as the first exercise in building community and trust among participants.
Virginia State Senator Patsy Ticer welcomed the 22 new students with a message about her journey from a mom and community volunteer to a City Council member to Alexandrias mayor, to Virginia state senator.
Five alumni of the PLTI program, Stacey Grigsby, Bob Lanier, Doris Stanley, Tahseena Hamid and Sara Salman, told new students of their PLTI experience and their work in the community as a result. Some of the community work of PLTI alumni is mentoring students, making William Ramsay Elementary School a hub of parental involvement, serving on the Community Services Board to ensure the availability of fair and appropriate mental health services and serving on the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia.
