Sportsmans club names Athletes of the Month

The Alexandria Sportsman’s Club named its Student Athletes of the Month for January on Tuesday night at the Old Dominion Boat Club, giving the honors to St. Stephen’s / St. Agnes swimmer Ferrel Atkins and Bishop Ireton girls basketball player Sarah Baldwin. Baldwin, a senior, is averaging 11.8 points a game for the Cardinals and erupted for a season-high 26 points in her team’s December 5 win against St. Stephen’s. The recreation youth athletes of the month were Audrey Dervarics and Savannah Devereux (volleyball).

City crowns girls volleyball champs

In a spirited and tightly contested finals matchup late last month, the Alexandria youth girl’s volleyball champion was decided when coach Shelby Corbin’s team defeated coach Mary Ann Hoffman’s squad two games to one for its first league title. The December 18 championship was set after both Hoffman’s and Corbin’s teams won their semifinal matches by a score of two games to one.

Keeping tabs on Alexandria alumni

Remember that lightning-quick touchdown that opened Saturday’s NFC divisional playoff game? That was none other than former Episcopal High School star Tim Hightower (class of 2004) racing 70-yards essentially untouched to give his Arizona Cardinals a brief lead against the New Orleans Saints. Though the Cardinals lost 45-14 to end their season, Hightower racked up 87 yards on just six carries. He finished his second year in the league with 598 yards rushing and eight touchdowns.

And if you were watching Comcast Sportsnet last Sunday you would have also noticed former T.C. Williams standout Tierra Ruffin-Pratt (2009) playing for the University of North Carolina in their 75-64 win against Maryland. Now wearing No. 44, the Titan great finished with nine points, near her season average of 8.1 points per game.

Another T.C. grad, Mike Davis (2007), now in his junior year at the University of Illinois, leads the Big Ten in rebounding at 9.7 boards per game. The 6-foot-9 Davis is also averaging 11.5 points per game for the 12-7 Illini.
