Alexandria artist one of 20 selected for craft show

Alexandrian Don Becker was one of 20 indie artists selected to exhibit their work in the “AltCraft” category at the 34th annual American Craft Council Show in Baltimore, organizers announced last week.

From the recycled and reclaimed to the reconstructed and reused, the group of artists, hailing from all around the country, will display and sell pieces selected from hundreds of applicants through a rigorous jury process, according to Jessie Benson, a spokesman for the show.

“The [craft] council is proud to present a national stage for these artists who tend to exhibit at smaller, local craft shows,” Benson said.

Benson will display his work, like the funky puppets he makes, with the other artists throughout the weekend, from February 25 through 28. New this year, the retail show will consist of four full days.

Local author publishes ‘exceptional’ book

Jim Garland, a local author, recently came out with The Practical Guide to Exceptional Living, a book aimed at transforming the way people manage their time, live healthy, achieve personal goals and become financially stable.

The strategic approach he takes has been applauded by critics, as has his “down to earth” way of writing, though he does not consider himself a self-help guru “and I’m definitely not a motivational speaker,” he said.

An entrepreneur who started a private jet charter business yes, a business chartering private jets out of his trunk, Garland said his end goal, which he has achieved, “has given me everything I’ve ever wanted.”
