Local entrepreneur and author Jim Garland signed copies of his book, The Practical Guide to Exceptional Living, at Belle Haven Country Club Sunday evening as part of a fundraiser for the Alexandria Seaport Foundation.

Garland, who started a multi-million-dollar business out of the trunk of his car, sees the book as a way to give direction to young people.

“I think of this as a tool to teach our youth,” Garland said. “Through nonprofits, associations and corporations, my goal is to get the book into the hands of one million young adults between the ages of 14 and 25 by May 1st, 2011.

“The book teaches goal-setting, taking responsibility for yourself and how to live a long, healthy life,” Garland said.
